Barton banned from US

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton s criminal record has seen him denied him a work visa for the club s pre-season tour of the United States.

Barton was convicted of assault and affray in 2008 after an incident outside a McDonald s restaurant in Liverpool, and he was also convicted of a training ground assault on his then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Newcastle, who leave on Sunday, will play Sporting Kansas (July 20), Orlando City (July 23) and Columbus Crew (July 26).

But Barton has been notified by the US Embassy that he will not be granted a work visa for the tour, and the 28-year-old took the decision on the chin.

Unfortunately, I was denied my visa due to my past, Barton said.

I regret not being able to travel with the club on thi…

Bayern reach Kim agreement with Hernandez set for PSG switch

Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Kim Min-jae over the personal terms for a proposed transfer from Napoli, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Bundesliga champions are thus preparing for the imminent departure of Lucas Hernandez, who is on the verge of joining Paris Saint Germain, keen for their squad not to lose depth or quality.

Apparently, the 26-year-old South Korean defender has accepted a proposal of a five-year contract with Bayern, and all that now remains is for the Bavarians to trigger the release clause in his contract with Napoli which kicks in at the start of July; the Serie A champions are reluctant to sell their arguably best centre-back.

Kim was reportedly high on the wish list of Manchester United, who are believed to be looking for an upgrade …

FIFA World Cup Preview: Australia v Spain

Having come into the FIFA World Cup with vastly differing expectations, Australia and Spain clash on Monday knowing their fates are aligned.

Drawn in a tough-looking Group B alongside 2010 runners-up the Netherlands and dark horses Chile, the 2014 finals were always likely to provide a difficult test for both teams.

Australia, the lowest ranked side of the 32 coming into the showpiece in Brazil, were not expected to progress beyond the group stage but Spain, defending champions and winners of the past three major international tournaments, remained among the favourites to lift the famous trophy come July 13.

However, Vicente del Bosque s side were almost unrecognisable in losing their first two games, a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of the Netherlands followed up by…

Coyle welcomes Villas-Boas encounter

Bolton boss Owen Coyle insists he is looking forward to facing Chelsea and his old friend Andre Villas-Boas on Sunday.

Both managers took their coaching exams together in 2007 in Scotland, with the Blues boss then a coach under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

Villas-Boas carried on under the now Real Madrid man’s wing until 2009 before moving to Academica and then Porto in Portugal, before landing the top job in west London this summer.

Coyle says he could see the talents of the Portuguese coach when they were gaining their badges together and is not surprised with the progress the Chelsea boss has made.

Ultimately he is a winner. I saw that when we did our pro-licence together, Coyle told reporters.

This is not somebody who thought I ll go…

Ramos urges Real Madrid to ´fight to the end´

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos says they will not give up in the fight to win La Liga following Saturday s 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad.

Gareth Bale s late header sealed maximum points in a difficult encounter at Anoeta to send Madrid top of the table, having played a game more than Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Ramos admits it was vital to turn up the heat on their title rivals with a win and is now pinning his hopes on one or two favours to help their bid for a first title since 2012.

The team did everything, he told Movistar Plus. We had no luck with our chances but we were pushing well. It was a final, you play for La Liga. We had to put pressure on.

As long as there are chances, we have to fight to the end. That s Madrid s philosophy. It s th…

Manchester United have been woken up by the concerning news that Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea could leave Old Trafford as early as beginning of June for an overdue transfer to Real Madrid.

Spanish shot stopper was subject of a collapsed deadline transfer to Real Madrid last summer when he was ultimately ended up staying at Manchester United due to late submission of documents which sparked a war of words between Manchester United and Real Madrid with both clubs refusing to take the blame and pointing fingers at each other.

De Gea’s paperwork was not filed before the midnight Spanish transfer deadline leaving goalkeeper distraught about the late twist to an incredible day. Real Madrid were wo…

Coutinho ‘definitely’ open to Premier League return – agent

Philippe Coutinho is definitely open to the possibility of returning to the Premier League, according his agent Kia Joorabchian.

The Brazilian failed to live up to the expectations following his €160 million move from Liverpool to Barcelona in January 2018. He spent this season on loan at Bayern Munich, but the Bundesliga champions decided against triggering the option to turn the deal permanent. His future is now up in the air, and while Barca boss Quique Setien recently said the Brazilian could be reintegrated into his squad, his representative appears to be pointing in another direction.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur have all been credited with interest in bringing the 27-year-old playmaker back to England. Liverpool, on the other hand, reported…

Prodl pens new four-year Watford contract

Sebastian Prodl has signed a new four-year deal with Watford, the Premier League side have announced.

The 30-year-old defender has accumulated 61 appearances for Watford since his arrival at Vicarage Road from Werder Bremen in 2015.

Currently sidelined with a hamstring strain, the Austria international who picked up the club s Player of the Season award last term has missed Watford s last two fixtures, though could be fit to face Swansea City on Saturday as the Hornets look to bounce back from their 6-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out.

Messi is the best in the world… Barca players must adapt to him – De Jong

Lionel Messi remains the best footballer in the world and it is down to his Barcelona team-mates to play to the forward s strengths, according to midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The six-time Ballon d Or winner has yet to fully adapt to new boss Ronald Koeman s 4-2-3-1 system, failing to score from open play in six matches this season.

He has also created just one chance in LaLiga this term, with young academy product Ansu Fati five goals and one assist in all competitions stealing the limelight.

But De Jong, who has thrived in a deeper midfield role under Koeman, insists it is down to the others in Barca s squad to ensure Messi is in the right positions to work his magic.

When you have Messi in your team, of course you have the best player in the world in y…
