Jourdren: I deserve France call-up

Geoffrey Jourdren is baffled by Didier Deschamps snub, with the Montpellier goalkeeper adamant he should be called into the France squad.

Jourdren has spent his entire senior career playing for Montpellier since emerging from the club s youth ranks, winning the Ligue 1 title in 2011-12.

The 29-year-old s form has gone unnoticed by France coach Deschamps, with a solitary U21 appearance all to show for Jourdren s efforts.

Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin questioned the call ups of Benoit Costil (Rennes) and Stephane Ruffier (Saint-Etienne), claiming Jourdren is better than both those fellas .

Jourdren did not hide his frustration when questioning Deschamps decision making, telling the Ligue 1 show on beIN Sports: I don t feel inferior to them but that s t…

And the youngster credited Enrique as the driving force behind his selection for the match in Genoa.

The underlying reason for my call-up is Luis Enrique, who gave me great confidence, especially after my injury, and continues to believe in me, Borini told Il Messaggero.

Borini, who joined Roma from Chelsea at the beginning of this season, claims he is not getting carried away with his rising stock.

I think just about playing and giving every…

Dynamo Kiev 5 Everton 2 (6-4 agg): Five-star hosts reach last eight

Dynamo Kiev produced a scintillating display to hammer Everton 5-2 and record a 6-4 aggregate victory in their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday.

Everton came from behind to win last week s first leg 2-1, but their advantage mattered little as Dynamo tore them apart in Kiev to reach the last eight of Europe s second-tier competition for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.

Andriy Yarmolenko set the tone for the hosts, opening the scoring with a 25-yard screamer, and although Romelu Lukaku levelled with an excellent effort of his own, goals from Lukasz Teodorczyk and Miguel Veloso had Dynamo in front both on the night and in the tie at the break.

Oleh Husyev, scorer of Dinamo s sole goal on Merseyside last week, then added a fourth before Antunes …

Algeria v Tunisia: Mahrez demands improvement in crucial Group B clash

Riyad Mahrez has called on Algeria to pick up where they left off in the second half of their Africa Cup of Nations opener against Zimbabwe when they take on Tunisia on Thursday.

The Leicester City winger scored twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at Stade de Franceville, his second coming just eight minutes from time after Kudakwashe Mahachi and Nyasha Mushekwi had given Zimbabwe a shock half-time lead.

The point means Algeria s fate remains in their hands, but they will be eager to take all three against a Tunisia side who were beaten 2-0 by Senegal on matchday one and will be out if they lose again.

Mahrez has now challenged his team-mates to build on their second-half performance from Sunday in order to get a crucial win against the 2004 champions.

West Ham United have confirmed that captain Kevin Nolan has left the club by mutual consent.

Nolan was appointed skipper soon after his arrival from Newcastle United in 2011, but made only 19 Premier League starts last season.

I ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at West Ham United and will take some great memories with me, the 33-year-old told West Ham s official website.

Heckingbottom ditches Barnsley to take charge of Leeds

Paul Heckingbottom has been appointed as Leeds United s new head coach just four days after penning a new contract as Barnsley manager.

The 40-year-old has agreed an 18-month deal at Elland Road and succeeds Thomas Christiansen, who departed on Sunday on the back of a 4-1 home loss to Cardiff City.

Leeds are seven points off the play-off places and lie 10th in the Championship, having taken two points from six games, while they were dumped out of the FA Cup by fourth-tier Newport County.

Heckingbottom led Barnsley to promotion from League One via the play-offs in 2015-16, also collecting the EFL Trophy, and secured a creditable 14th-place finish last season.

Laporte to Man City: Guardiola continues huge defence spending

Manchester City s evolution under Pep Guardiola is most readily associated with free-flowing attacking football, but Aymeric Laporte s arrival for a club-record £57million from Athletic Bilbao continues a remarkable run of spending big at the other end of the pitch.

This trend goes back to Manuel Pellegrini s time in charge and was accelerated last year as Guardiola upgraded his full-back options.

The Premier League leaders now have six of the 13 most-expensive defenders of all time on their books – along with Ederson, who is the most-costly goalkeeper in history in terms of pound sterling.

Here, we look at their highs and lows and find Laporte should not necessarily expect things to run smoothly for him at the Etihad Stadium.
